The Preserve at Farley Boat Works

The Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association broke ground for The Preserve last year, with construction projected to be completed by mid-summer 2023. The Preserve will house a maritime museum with marine artifacts and a collection of vintage and antique fishing tackle donated by Dr. David McKee. The Preserve will also be used for different types of events.

The Preserve was architecturally inspired by the old U.S. Lifesaving Station that was built in Port Aransas in 1876. The towers on these types of buildings were used to watch for vessels in distress. The station would then deploy a rescue boat to the vessels.

The U.S. Lifesaving Service

The U.S. Lifesaving Service was the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard. The U.S. Lifesaving Service building was lost to hurricanes in the early 1900s and has been rebuilt multiple times as a Coast Guard station. The Coast Guard station, which was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey, has been completely rebuilt at the same location as the first U.S. Lifesaving station.
