Dan Parker: 25 Years of Port Aransas Journalism

Jan 15, 2023 | PAPHA Lectures

As part of the Museum’s Winter Lecture Series, Dan Parker spoke on Jan. 10, 2023, about growing up in Port Aransas during the 1960s and ‘70s and then later covering the town as a reporter.

Parker, 61, was born and raised in Port Aransas and has worked as a newspaper journalist for more than 35 years. His experiences have included covering Hurricane Harvey and the largest fire in the town’s history.

He and his family endured Hurricane Celia in 1970 and witnessed the Ixtoc oil spill that hit in 1979.

Parker is a longtime Port A surfer. He and his wife, Michelle Parker, are authors of a book that’s a photographic history of surfing here.

Dan Parker worked hard one summer and saved up $135. He bought a surfboard from Pat Magee’s when it sat where the Crazy Cajun is now. After that, he quit and surfed the rest of the summer. He still has the board, seen here in the photo.
