The theme of this year’s competition was The Natural Coast. Poems were judged by two Poet Laureates and a published local poet.

The Port Aransas Museum appreciates all the students who submitted poetry, their teachers and their principals. The judges had a difficult time picking winners from so many great entries.

About the Aline B. Carter Poetry Contest

The Carter Family, who built the Chapel on the Dunes, co-sponsor the poetry contest each year with the the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association.

Aline B. Carter began her annual poetry prize competition for young poets in the early 1940s.  After being appointed Texas Poet Laureate in the 1947-1949 term, Aline co-founded Texas Poetry Day which is held annually on October 15th.

In that spirit, the Chapel on the Dunes and Port Aransas Museum host the annual poetry competition, which is open to all Port Aransas High School and Brundrett Middle School students.
